Campo Marzio Neighborhood

The suites are located in a building built in the 14th century AD in the neighborhood called Campo Marzio since the ancient Romans. Since the founding of the city, this place named after the god Mars was a sacred place in the era of the seven kings of Rome, an agricultural field from which the Tiber Island originated. Over the centuries it has been the nerve center of Roman life and still the most fascinating district where all the most significant places in the history of Rome are concentrated. In fact, only by leaving the suite will you be immersed in one of the most beautiful squares in Rome, Piazza di Pietra located about 50 meters from the Pantheon, Via del Corso, the Column of Marcus Aurelius, Galleria Alberto Sordi and about 100 meters from the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Venice, 5 minutes walk from the Colosseum, the Imperial Forums and Piazza Navona. The history of this beautiful neighborhood in the center of the history of Rome is best explained in the historical cultural show “Wellcome to Rome” included in your stay package.

Vocation and history of the neighborhood

The neighborhood was born in the republican era after the expulsion of the last King of Rome Tarquinius the Superb. The area called Campo Marzio, a sacred place dedicated to the god of war Mars, was just outside the official city limits and used for training by the Roman army and for the reception of foreign ambassadors. The construction of sacred buildings begins, in this area, from the first King and founder of Rome Romulus who, as legend has it, ascended to heaven in this place while he was reviewing the army. The monumentalization of the neighborhood began with Cesare who built the Pompeo Theater here and continued with all his successors who enriched it with incredible buildings such as the Pantheon and the Baths of Marco Vespasiano Agrippa or the Mausoleum of Augustus wanted by the same emperor, the Via Lata which from 1466 became Via del Corso, the Temple of Hadrian, a stadium which would later become Piazza Navona, the baths of Nero and many others among temples and public buildings. In the Middle Ages it was one of the most populated neighborhoods together with Trastevere and Borgo San Pietro where the life and economy of the city took place mainly given by the pilgrimages of the faithful to San Pietro. With Pope Martino V, Pope Sixtus IV, Pope Julius II and Pope Clement III the Renaissance explodes with a renewed urbanization, Ponte Sisto, Via di Ripetta, Via del Babbuino, Piazza di Spagna, the splendid squares and obelisks that redesign the neighborhood definitively in the beauty and majesty that distinguishes it from the rest of Rome. Artists like Brunelleschi, the great Donatello, the genius of Michelangelo, Raffaello and many others worked in the surrounding churches and monuments. With the Baroque Campo Marzio continued to embellish itself with the works of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Caravaggio, Francesco Borromini and the greatest artists of the time embellishing with their works Piazza Navona, via Condotti, Piazza di Pietra with the Temple of Hadrian, Piazza di Spagna and Via Frattina doing that open-air work that is the Campo Marzio district, by far the most beautiful in Rome.

Food & Restaurant

The Campo Marzio district is the expression of the tradition of Roman cuisine in all its forms. Our suites located in Piazza di Pietra and Via Frattina are 5 minutes walk from each other. Going to Piazza di Pietra in the morning you can have an excellent coffee at the Caffettiera, one of the most renowned coffee bars in the city or taste their equally refined Neapolitan pastry, enjoy a typical sandwich with porchetta for lunch at the Panino Ingegnoso or in the evening take an aperitif at Salotto 42 one of the most exclusive cocktail bars in Rome in both cases sitting on the benches and admiring the Temple of Hadrian in all its majesty obviously only after having dined according to tradition and innovation at Osteria dell’Ingegno one of the first restaurants to seek the concept of modernity in the tradition of the Roman tavern. In Via Frattina there is the Bar Frattina both for breakfast and for a sandwich for lunch. If, on the other hand, you are looking for the authenticity of traditional cuisine in Via della Croce, you can have lunch or dinner at “Otello alla Concordia”, an exceptional historic restaurant that has always been run by the same family. In this restaurant, if you are a movie lover, you will be able to enjoy the best traditional Roman cuisine on the same tables where masterpieces such as Bicycle Thieves and an important part of Italian Neorealist cinema have been written after eating together with Otello the founder of the restaurant, ask for Andrea he will tell you the whole story. If, on the other hand, you want a younger and more informal atmosphere, Taste in Piazza Augusto Imperatore will make for you here you will find excellent Spritz and aperitifs, plus for dinner, pizza on the pan and Roman dishes in a modern key.
